Toluca IA Coarse
Octahedrite
Display 49K GIF Enlargement
Toluca is an inclusion-rich
coarse octahedrite. There is a great deal of human history behind this
meteorite. Found in 1776 in Xiquipilco within the Toluca Valley of Mexico,
fragments of this meteorite were collected for many years by the local Indian
population. Many pieces were forged into agricultural implements and used by
the local community.
This photograph shows 21
slices cut from a single Toluca specimen -- several weeks work. The individual
pieces show the interior of the meteorite in a step-by-step fashion not unlike
a C/T scan of the human body.

Toluca, see The Toluca Irons from the May 1995 issue of METEORITE!
